What I do
I take a human-centered approach to data science. My goal is to create data and AI solutions that are useful for clients, borrowing methods from design and user-research to ensure that data products and solutions meet a real user need.
How I got here
When I transitioned from data journalism to start a data visualization practice within an IBM data science team, I struggled to create effective visualizations. I realized this was because I was often brought in at the end of projects that had not been guided by how the client would actually use the predictive analytics my team produced.
As a result, I started to involve myself earlier in client engagements, employing user research and design thinking to influence the direction of data science work and get what I needed to design effective data visualizations for the client. I have continued to use these tools in other roles since, working on a variety of data and AI projects to ensure they are guided by both user and business needs.
